Title: 3D Printer Projects
Post by: Dragon on May 25, 2020, 20:08:01
Although I don?t have a 3D printer yet, I hope to get one eventually. In the meantime, I thought it might be nice to put together a list of some printer projects that look cool. Feel free to add to this list.

PRINT-IN-PLACE SPRING LOADED BOX

Update I did eventually print this on my Davinci Mini W+, but it didn't get the detail that was needed. Later, on my Sidewinder X2, it was able to print out and work properly using the Super Quality settings. Unfortunately, after closing the box lid overnight, the spring broke.

I was looking for some cloud tokens to use a blocks for the Power Grid game. I came across this project which includes some cloud shaped lids that look pretty neat, so I've resized them to 40mm wide and I'm printing up some to see how they look just to mark the territories that aren't in use for a game.

I was just browsing on Thingiverse.com this evening and came across some cool stuff that I hadn't seen before. Here are 3 models that I've downloaded today... haven't printed them yet, but I'm going to try them out.

By the way, the Portal Companion Cube turned out great! Lots of other models haven't come out so well, but that was a really good one.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3056016 - Goliath fighter or Barbarian

This Goliath fighter printed out pretty well on my XYZPrinting Da Vinci Mini W+. I also printed Conan, from my previous post, and that one turned out well also. Both had some parts of the swords that were a bit thin and rough looking though, so not perfect prints, but decent.

Here's another HeroScape figure... one of my favorite dragons, Mimring.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4345987

I've already printed one of these as big as I could get in my printer - 150mm. I really like this one.

I checked the other dragon that I had previously listed in this thread, and unfortunately, the model has big gaps in the back legs, so I never printed that one.

Small Hinged Treasure Chest

Boss Monster - Boss Level Up Token

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4947321

For the Boss Monster Token, I adjusted the size a few times before finding a size that I really like - 38mm x 3mm. It squashes the embossing down a bit and makes it more like a traditional coin, close to the size of some old one dollar coins that I have, giving it a nice size for handling.

Last night I was looking through a bunch of coaster holder models on thingiverse last night, wanting to get my disorganized pile of coasters into a nice place. I came across this Castle style Coaster Holder.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3116072/files

I modified it in the preview window just a bit before printing, increasing the size to 125mm across because some of my coasters are a little bigger than others and I didn't want any getting stuck, and printed it using only 5% infill. It turned out great. :)

Fully 3D-printable wind-up car gift card - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3308710/files

This is one that I printed recently on my Artillery Sidewinder X2. It turned out well. I did need to adjust the wind key to print at 98% of the original size in order to get it to fit. I also needed to file the inside of the wheels where they connect to the axels. Aside from that, everything worked straight off printing the two cards.

Today I came across a site that had some interesting tips for being able to continue a 3d print that stopped. I haven't read through it all, but it looks helpful, so if there is ever a need to start halfway through a project, it might be worth checking out this page:

3D Printing Tech Tips: Recover a Failed Print

This solution can help you recover your print if it failed due to the following reasons:

https://www.3dplatform.com/Blog/2018/July/3D-Printing-Tech-Tips-Recover-a-Failed-Print#:~:text=For%20Simplify%203D%3A&text=STEP%201%3A%20Locate%20the%20layer,resume%20your%20print%20from%20Z.

Unfortunately, printing the Black Knight helmet failed half way through. I'm using the technique described on the previous page, but realized it probably needed to adjust the G28 (the command to home all axes). I found another site that explained it: https://all3dp.com/2/g28-g-code-homing/
Now, am I able to get this to successfully return to a print job that was nearly 2 days in?

The Raspberry Pi Case turned out nicely using the Clear Green and Gold filament, colors inspired by The Legend Of Zelda games. The logo piece didn't fit snuggly into the lid though, so I did need to glue it. Also, that piece isn't the same thickness as the top, so it will either be raised on the box, which is how I chose to do it, or it will take more space inside. I was concerned that the box wouldn't close tightly if I had it inside more because of how close the opening is to the network port.  The top and bottom fit tightly enough together though that I've gone without screws for now. It doesn't snap together, but it holds well just against the RPI itself.
