In 1999 December 24th christmas eve my family opened all our big presents, because on the 25th we were with the rest of the family. That year i was 7 and happy with any gift given to me (except clothes eewwww). i had recieved a train set and thought it would get any better than that to my surprise the very last gift handed to me was rather large. Quickly i tore into the gift and once unwrapped i screamed with joyous praise thanking my parents right away I wanted to play with it. without any hesitation i opened the box and found out it needed to charge for NINE hours! I was so upset, while my father teased me I just stared at this gorgeous work of art infront of me. Then my dad reached into his back pocket and pulled out the already charged &.2v battery. I rapidly rushed to put it in the car. then I ran outside to the street that was clear of any snow and I unleashed the beast within tearing up the pavement for 15 minutes and melting snow with the burning of my rubber. It was at this moment that I fell in love with tyco R/C cars. The Beast inside me was revealed by none other than the Super Fast Traxx. Later I had found out that my mother had purchased it 4 years before giving it to me at a clearance tent sale event at our local Boscovs. I still thank her to this day for giving me the best gift EVER!!

And here she is!!!! ;D

Very cool story. I'm surprised that she held it for 4 years. My wife barely seems to be able to save gifts for me and my kids. Gifts are usually handed over early or purchased late in our family. Do you still have that Super Fast Traxx in your collection?

My first fully functional Tyco R/C car was a sweet looking Tyco Bandit, black with neon colored stickers. My brother got a red Heads Up Hopper at the same time. We would race those two R/C vehicles around on the dirt track we had in the back yard and eventually (stupidly) ended up hooking the two vehicles together for a tug of war. Unfortunately, the gears couldn't hold up to that kind of torture, so the R/C vehicles were taken back to the store. My brother either got a replacement for his Heads Up Hopper or his didn't break down - I don't quite remember - but there was no replacement available for my Tyco Bandit since they were all sold out. When I got a little older, I bought a Tyco Turbo Lamborghini, but it never quite replaced the Bandit. I eventually sold my Lamborghini after getting into other R/C cars, including the Traxxas T-Maxx and Kyosho Mini-Z, but there is still a part of me that hopes I'll get another Tyco Bandit.

my first tyco was a taiyo 8xAA hopper my bro give me coz he was getting into the scale electric my dad done the atic out for his track so he give me that i had a blast with it on the coal tips taking a shovel to make jumps and see how fast it would go down the black dusty hills and i broke it of course all the  time but my bro would always manage to fix it till i stripped  the gears that year for xmas my dad bought me a pick up fast traxx which was awesome go up anything and wouldnt get stuck as much as the hopper would

My story also started when i was 7 years old, it was christmas morning and i looked under the tree to find a Nikko Turbo Panther. This was the first R/C car i had ever owned and it started my love for these toys and a collection that still grows today.

Oh yeah the very next christmas i asked for a Radio Shack Golden Arrow and received a Nikko Big Bubba instead...LMAO.

Well back in the day we could go into our local radioshack which was in the mall and u could buy either Nikko or Radioshack r/c cars which really where the same just different stickers. Back then there were a bunch to choose from and you could test drive them before you bought them. Those were the good ole days.

If you wanted tyco products you had to get them from toysrus or service merchandise and you couldnt test drive them, but i remember it was always fun looking at the r/c cars on display inside the glass at toysrus..lol

i remember the days of radio shacks and nikko, for the most part i usually got radio shack since they were cheaper but like mentioned under neath they were all nikko, most of the nikko an r/s cars back then were a ways ahead of tyco with digital proportianal and power. the hoppers and bandits are pretty fast but i had a radio shack blue shark buggy same as most the other 9.6 nikkos and radio shack buggies with different body that would pretty blow the tires off the tycos

i remember lookin at the r/cs in the glass cases at toys r us too, back then there were scorpions, black thunders a few similair type trucks and they had them for upto 300 bucks which was alot!!

speakin of toys r us, i was there tonight christmas shopping, have you guy seen the fast lane 1/10 scale dessert type trucks they have there, theyre border line hobby grade/toy compared to anything ive seen in a store as of yet, i believe 9.6 volt and on sale for 35 bucks they look pretty cool and also look like they will hold up better than any store bought r/c. theyre all plastic but have the same design as far as drive shafts and shock towers and control arms, someone should try one out

Wow, as a child we were very poor, my dad left to early to remember so with a single income family and four kids our Christmas's we never "great" I never had cool toys.
One day I was helping the lady that owned the trailer park we lived in moving groceries from her car to her house, I was ten, and while dropping groceries in her kitchen the bandit commercial came on and stopped me dead in my tracks, she apparently saw this, the next month was Christmas and there was a box on the steps outside Christmas morning and it was for me, it was a bandit... She never admitted to buying it but I know she did, that was the highlight of my childhood, that truck meant everything to me, I'm 28 now and I told my wife no matter what it takes, one day I will have another bandit.

about a little over a year ago i was on ebay and there was a red one in the box, the bid was at 50-60 bucks, it was the first time id ever thought to try and find one so i bid 100 bucks, shortly after i was out bid, i really figured that was gonna be the top dollar amount it would sell  for  so i bid again 250 bucks just  knowing that would cover anybody nickle and diming the bid at the end, when i logged back on it had sold for well over 300

if you wanna bandit you just pretty much gotta bite the bullet when a nice one comes up, altho every now and then you can get a deal on one if it slips pass the radar of everyone else. the red bandits are just about unobtainable, i suppose most parents bought their kids black bandits back then and awhole lot of the red ones didnt sell because the black ones are listed about 20 times to 1 over the red ones

well got the red bandit yesterday, turns out it doesnt need much tlc at all!!! theres hardly any scratches top or bottom, the chrome parts are perfect as far as scrapes are concerned, i was gonna put another chrome front bumper on it since i have an extra and the one that came with it was broken, but the chrome on the original is almost all still in tact with no wear so looks like ill be fixing it. looks like it was only played with in the dirt since it has alot of dirt on it and in it in some places but way better than i expected, turns out the eratic steering was the remote, i tried one of my others and it was just as it should be, the back tires and gears are messed up though, luckily i have extras

That was most likely missed because we didn't get spammed with tons of photos featuring crap. ;)  Now that you've brought it up though, I've corrected that discrepancy so we won't have to worry about that one anymore.

Anyway, I must have missed the "sad news about pandemics collection." What happened? Was that posted somewhere else recently? Either that or I'm forgetting what I've been reading.  :-\

-you need to be sensative to others, "haggle", would be a better word to use.  I'm not Jewish, but I have friends who are.  No offence to you ;)
Title: Re: Your tyco story

sensitive nothing, jew as in jewing someone down and jew for short of jewish is to different things, people need to be smart enuff to know the difference now had i said i need to jewish someone down what sense would that make?

***Note from Dragon: I don't want to get this topic off-track, since it is about something cool, our Tyco Stories... but you need to realize that the term "jewing down" is a derogatory term based on stereotypes that Jewish people are tight with their money. It might not be offensive to all Jews, but SavedONE is correct.***

Ok ive got a pretty cool story about me and my tycos. Years ago when I was about 5 and the red and black bandits had just come out my friends who were brothers lived behind me and got a red bandit and black bandit 9.6v turbos for christmas of 92. At the time I had the radio shack "off-roader" truck that was black with the white wheels and had hi/lo gears with the super low crawl ratio so it wasnt near as fast as the bandits but would climb anything. We used to race our trucks together all the time and I wanted a bandit so bad that when I used to go over to their house I would play with them more than they did. Daniel used to drag his red bandit behind his bike by a string so it was only a matter of time before they would of thrown them away. So years pass and in 97 they moved away to another city and we eventually stopped talking. Since tyco had stopped making the bandit back in 92 I searched and searched to find one at a garage sale or anywhere cause I just had to have one. I never had any luck on the bandits and after dozens of other cars I still wanted a bandit more than anything else out there. In 2002 I started to use ebay to try an find one and ended up seeing one on there brand new in the box. I went nuts and thought, I have to win this auction at any cost because ill never see one like this again. I ended up winning the auction after a war of 35 bids and a final price of $305.00 and all my friends thought I was nuts for buying it when I could have got a E-maxx or anything else for that price. To me it was worth every penny of it but still it wasnt the original bandits I played with as a kid. I went to college back in 2005 and slowly stopped playing with all the rc cars I had built up over the years. So one day back in 2006 I was in college and just happened to walk into one of my classes 5 mins early. I went up to the teacher to ask her something then I hear, Joey??? So I turn around to see who it is and its none other than daniels brother greg sitting right there. So im thinking, no way and start catching up with him and got into car talk and then one of the first things I thought to ask him about was the bandits. I didnt think he would remember them and I when I asked him about them I thought for sure they had thrown them away years ago. So im sitting here thinking how cool would it be if he still had one of them. Then he says oh yeah, I remember them very well and actually, I still have both of the sitting in the closet. I just about had a heart attack and said no *censored* dude. Then I said hey would you sell either of them, and he says sure. So im thinking crap how much do I offer him for these and off the top of my head I said ill give you $25 for em both and says, OK. So we went back to his house down the road and he gets the 2 bandits out of the closet and I about had a nostalgic attack. The black one which was his was in awesome shape and had the remote but no battery cover and he points to the fog light that was missing and says do you remember breaking that off with your off-roader when we first get these? I remember now knocking it off with my truck when we had a head on collision full speed. The red one had neither the battery cover or the remote and the front shock towers were both broken off and all springs were missing. So I took the truck apart and borrowed springs off a wild thing turbo hopper then took team associated rc18mt suspension parts and set up the shock tower and oil filled shocks in the front and the truck is now bullet proof. I would never for any amount of money consider selling either and they now sit up on a shelf next to the "off-roader" that I used to race them with.

I have a ton more tycos but the other one I remember was my ultra rare Twin Turbo Lamborghini that was the last one sold from toys r us back in 1998 and was extremely rare because it had the big square remote with the chrome handle like they used on the heads up hopper, instead of the pistol grip remote or the small square remote like the single turbo cars had. I feel like a totally idiot for returning it a week after I got it just because I flipped it over and knocked the wing off. I still after dozens of searching on ebay for the last 8 years have never seen another one out of the 200 ive seen on ebay.
Title: Re: Your tyco story
Post by: czstycor/c on January 01, 2011, 15:53:31
The older lambos were faster than the 90's ones. That is pretty awesome you still got turkeer ones you saw!
Title: Re: Your tyco story
Post by: Tyco Bandit King on January 01, 2011, 20:45:04
Yeah tyco actually made 3 different lamborghinis from 1989-98

1. 89 twin turbo "dual motor" pistol grip remote

2. 96-98 turbo "single motor" small square remote

3. 98 twin turbo "dual motor" large square remote with handle bar

The 2nd twin turbo was the fastest of all of them and had different motors than the original 89. My twin turbo from 98 was faster than my neighbors 89 version by a just a bit and the 89 version is just slightly faster than the single turbo. I have a red turbo and a black 89 twin turbo. They made so few of the 98 twin turbos that most people have never heard of them and there probably arent but a few left out there.

My Story.
I knew while in Elementary school that I had to have R/C car's.
I remember drooling over the car's at Radio Shack, sears catalog and in the Glass Case at Toys-R-us.
I begged and begged for R/C cars for Christmas while I was still very young, around 6 years old.
My first R/C was the Ferrari Tesarossa. I really wanted some thing Off-Road like a buggy, (my dad was cheap and I think the car was only $29) but I was still happy with the car. I remember putting scotch tape on the rear wheels and drifting around the Kitchen table.
My first off roader was the Yellow Ford 4x4 (made by Tyco). My mom found it at a garage sale. I had ton's of fun with it in the back yard. Trying to find stuff for it to clime over.
Then I remember the commercials they would run during cartoons after school. Tyco 9.6 Turbo!!!!!
OMG Must HAVE! Then I begged and begged for a Baja Bandit. Sweetest truck in the universe!
Never did get one for christmas... Just another $29 radio shack buggy, not a fast one either. Just the little ones that run on 6AA's. But my neighbor buddy got a Bandit. He let me drive it a few times. I remember taking off from a dead stop in low gear and the front end came up off the ground. I'm pretty sure I heard angels singing.
Few years later he was bord with the Bandit, so I traded him for my Nikko/LOBO truck with tracks (that was a fun truck to play with to.)
Then I was given a Tamiya Hornet, drove the wheels off that thing.
By now I've been through about 30 R/C's. I wish I did'nt wreck most of them. I'm slowing starting to restore and replace ones I had as a kid.
Now that I can buy anything, I'd still rather have an old Tyco, Nikko/Radio Shack.

Yep, that is the one I still have to this day. It's the one R/C out of all of them that I kept track of all of the parts when I tore it apart. Soon it will have a hobby conversion done to it.

Hey, whats this nikko/lobo tracked truck your talking about?  :P
I don't remember exactly. I don't think I even had it for a full year.

when i was a kid i had a small tyco taiyo black porsche that used to drive around indoors wow it was great with the rear tyres taped up spinning all over the place. but is was no good for outside driving as is was very slow and would get stuck on the smallest of stones that where laying on the pavement. so Christmas was coming up and i really wanted a off roader for outside use. well i cant remember how many shops i went round with my mum until i found the car i thought was the one for me. i was up at the counter and spotted a car sitting on the floor that wasn't on display in the shop it said max hopper on the box and it looked so cool. i turned to my mum and shouted that's the one that's the one right there. the guy behind the counter told us that the wee car on the floor was in for repair and that they didn't have any more at the time but he could try to get one sent up from one of the other stores. which he did [ thanks mister ] anyway Christmas morning arrived and so did the taiyo max hopper along with two packs of 8 AA battery's. and the fact that you could plug the charger into the car and didn't have to remove the Batts to charge them just blew my mind lol. i think about every kid i knew that year got a RC car of some sort for Xmas there was every thing from nikko areo buggy's till tamiya monster beetles whizzing up and down the street all day. best Xmas ever. after about a month of constent driving the max hopper give up the ghost and striped the gears. so was sent back to the shop and a new gearbox was fitted. but by the end of that summer the wee hopper was being held together with zip ties and tape after about six month of jumping and bashing the hopper couldn't take any more and was put on the shelf to be replaced by a tamiya supper blackfoot. i guess my mum must have binned the hopper at some point coz i cant remember what ever happend to it. but its ok i decide to get another on a few years ago and after a few years of hunting i found one well found two broken ones and was Abel to build one from the two lol.

hey all, new to forum tried to post something but didn't go through apparently. anyway i recently got 2 tyco vehicles on craigslist at a really good price and i was wondering how rare they could be. I can't find too much on them and thought you guys could help. I found a craigslist ad for "2 radio controlled vehicles and 1 hovercraft" and out of curiousity i clicked it and it was a 9.6v scorcher and a mini typhoon II. I'm into all rc cars especially when the price is good but tycos are something different and was an honor to have found such beautiful vehicles. Anyway, i saw a scorcher 9.6v kinda beat up go for 150 recently but i dont see them too often on ebay and when i do it's usually the red one in 9.6v. I have the gray one and it is almost flawless! anyone have any idea how rare a gray scorcher especially in almost perfect condition is? I'm new to the tycos of the good economy era since back when they were the thing, my mom wouldn't spend 80 dollars plus battery and charger on just 1 vehicle so i had nikkos and new brights. I'd love to hear from anyone who could give me info on these 2.

i knew they had a 6v super scorcher but had no idea they had a 9.6v one. would have been nice if i would have payed real close attention to these details back when we all had these kind of cars running them like they'd be around forever. Since yellow is my fave color i think i would have to pick one up given the chance unless of course they want an arm and a leg for it, but other than that 6v one on ebay i've never seen one in 9.6v.

My story is kinda sad but i have told it before on my old account. But i will share today with you fine folks, I was about five years old when i was placed into foster care due to phisically abusive parents.
While in foster homes which sometime prove to be just as bad as my other home i have always wanted tycos especially the fast traxx.I remembered x-mas time came around and my foster brother which was my foster parents real son got a fast traxx and all i would ever get was clothes no fooling CLOTHES!!!And he never took care of it i remember after he would bash the heck out of it i would go get a damp warm rag and scrub it off and would drool for hours, yeah i would even set the gear into nuetral and pretend i was in the cockpit of that thing.
Well needless to say i never got a fast traxx and my foster parents replaced his three times after he would break his.It literally would break my heart knowing that i was just an extra paycheck to them and they probably used the money the state of California gave them to take care of me for that. So that has been my motivation behind my purchases over the last few years. Thanks for reading didnt mean to bring you down but there it is.

^ Man what a punk ass kid  >:(

I knew kids just like that growing up, I would goto their houses and they would have toys I always dreamed of just sitting on the floor piled up, not taken care of and probably only played with a few times.  Man that always annoyed me.

Did you ever try to keep the old ones and mess with them?  Or did they exchange em at the store?

When I was a kid, the Turbo Hopper was the epitome of awesome.  On our block, it was the pinnacle of RC technology.  Not because we'd never heard of Team Associated or Tamiya (which we hadn't), but because the commercials made them look like they could jump canyons at 100mph!  I wanted one so bad.  I got to play with my friend's, but 8 new AA batteries are hard to come by when you're 7.

I begged for one forever, and finally one Christmas my sister and I got Heads Up Turbo Hoppers.  And, my dad was super-cool at understanding kids and toys, so he made sure to get different frequencies and spare battery packs- WooT!  Still, even at that age I thought the head was gimmicky, and it took my dad a year to convince me that it was a Turbo Hopper ("No, dad, the Turbo Hopper has diff'rent stickers and there's no guy's head inside!"), but it was my favorite RC of all time.

I recently got into hobby-grade RCs, but I miss the innovation and style of the old Tycos so I plan to start a lil collection.  They're not cheap on ebay, though....

I grew up and I was lucky to have a few Tycos, I wanted a Typhoon and/or a Turbo Bandit when I was 8 or 9. But my dad knew a guy that broke a control arm on a Bandit and he didn't get me one. Back then I lived in Oklahoma and our backyard was a HUGE school playground, and the ground was all red dust just like the Bandit commercial. It would've been the perfect place for a RC truck!

A year or so later I got a Micro Bandit that still works.

One year later I got my first full function RC which is a Mini Bandit, still works and looks good.

For Christmas of '93 I finally got a 9.6v car; the Scorcher that I wanted so much. I had fun with that one, then one day one of the front wheels rolled away into a storm drain. It never handled the same and took some of the fun out of the car. Years later the ESC overheats and some of the body is warped from a heater or fireplace. It still runs, but it's in rough shape.

In '94 I wanted a Eliminator to replace the 5 wheeled Scorcher; it was easier to convince my parents to get another 9.6v car since I already had a battery pack. I got one and I LOVED that truck, but a month in the steering quit working. So I took it back, but it was discontinued at that point; I swore I'd get another one someday.

So I traded the Eliminator for a Hi-Jacker, it was heaver and slower, but less prone to rollovers. I still wished it was an Eliminator though. I drove that car for years until everything wore out. It doesn't run anymore, I'm sure I can get it to run again, it needs a transistor or something.

I decided to search for an Eliminator recently and I got one eBay a few days ago, and it brings back memories! It was the one with missing decals, other than that it's pretty mint for it's age. I see that it was on this forum also. The parts and controller feel brand new compared to my Hi-Jacker; the seller said the gear selector was funny, but it feels new and tight! I'm in the process of recreating the decals, we'll see how that turns out.

I knew that eliminator went to a good home. I'm glad you love it like it needs to be loved. It's never the vehicle, its only worth the scrap they're made of its the memories it brings back that makes them worth twice their weight in gold. The years that eliminator was in stores were the best years. Toys inspired imagination and creativity. memories of playing outdoors with your friends all running our tycos and nikkos and even radio shack cars. Sometimes 10 or more kids with their cars all out at one time (yeah sometimes we had frequency issues). Now they took all of the imagination out of the toys. Kids are all shut ins playing their simulated reality. If they make a game where you're 12 in the 1990's you can plug me in and and leave me in my room. For now we just have the things that remind us of different simpler better times.

Hey everybody, I'm new here.

I had a Bandit (black) and a FastTraxx (also black) growing up.  I got them as gifts when I was in elementary school, probably close to 20 years ago.  Man I loved those things.  My dad and I would race them up and down the street all the time.  As I got older I gradually lost interest in playing with them, so the cars collected dust in my closet.

Fast forward quite a bit - I'm now married with a three year old son and a daughter on the way.  My son really took a liking to a cheap Radio Shack RC car of unknown origin that we found while cleaning my home office, but it was too weak to drive on carpet, much less in grass.  So a couple days ago I went to our garage, dug around for a while, and found the Tyco cars in a box.  We picked up some new battery packs today and drove the FastTraxx around in the yard for a while.  I had forgotten how ridiculously fun it was to drive, and my son had an absolute blast with it.  His three year old mind couldn't quite comprehend that he was playing with one of daddy's toys.

Both cars need a little work (the Bandit is missing rear springs and may have stripped forward gears :/ and the Traxx needs new treads) so you may be seeing some more posts from me on this forum in a vain attempt to find replacement parts.  But I just wanted to enter my Tyco story into the record.

When I was about 14 or 15 years old I had a Tyco rc car. It was made in the mid 90s. I know everyone had one.lol Well this one was special, and I have not been able to find it anywhere. There are no pics online, I can't even remember what it was called. Bear with me while I try and explain what it looked like. First off it was very long and the color was red. It had 2 very skinny front wheels with suspension, and had a Huge single track/trax, on the rear. It looked somewhat like a snowmobile but wasn't one! Im sure it was made by Tyco. If anyone knows what it was called or have a picture they want to share it would be amazing! Thanks
