Best (and worst) FREE Demos for PS3
« on: February 04, 2010, 09:30:19 »
If you have a PS3 and you haven't downloaded any demos yet, I think you're missing out. There is a bunch of free stuff that can keep you entertained for hours. Here is a list of some of the demos that I've played. If you have played some PS3 demos, be sure to tell us about them here.

Bomberman Ultra is one of my favorite demos... simply because it's pretty much the same game that you'd get to play if you bought the full game. Ok... so it's lacking quite a few features, but that's what demos do. But at least with this demo, you can play it over and over and over. I have the old PS1 Bomberman game, and the standard game was about all we played anyway, other than choosing different maps sometimes. There are a couple maps that you can play on, and at least two different game modes, they even allow some character customization if you want to spend the time customizing your Bomberman to look like a pirate or ballerina. Games are quick, and it looks like you could have up to 4 human players on at once. (The full version allows 8 players at a time - sounds crazy... and that's a heck of a lot of controllers to buy!)

Comet Crash is another favorite at our house. It's a "tower defense" game, where you and your opponent each have a base and you're primarily building turrets around to defend them. You also can make "Ops" buildings to get troops which you can send out to attack the enemy base. With two controllers the demo game works for 1 or 2 players in Training, Campaign, or Battle modes. Training teaches you how to play step-by-step. Campaign pits the humans against on AI opponent. and the Battle pits the human players against each other. There are multiple difficulty levels for the Campaign which can all be used, but the demo stops at 3 levels. This is another fun demo, with plenty to play for free!

...

Now that I've mentioned a couple of my favorites, I'll mention one demo that is not really worth the time to download... except maybe just to remind you that you don't need to buy UNO for the PS3. Oops, I gave it away...

UNO is probably the biggest waste of effort for a demo. You get a maximum of 10 minutes of playtime - 5 minutes in Single Player mode and another 5 minutes in Multi-Player mode. Of course, we all know what UNO is... even my kids know how to play UNO, which is why my son asked me to download the demo. So he got to play one game by himself, maybe two, before it timed out and went to a BUY ME screen. The next day he asked me to play it with him, so I did. We were able to finish one game. A couple other bad points about the UNO demo, which would surely be the same in the full game, are that your cards are visible to everyone else looking at the screen, which might be only briefly if you're just hitting X as soon at it's your turn (the highest point card for the color appears to automatically be chosen for you) but in that time someone COULD potentially see what colors you have to block your win... which is one of the few strategic components of UNO. The second, and probably worst, problem that I see with the UNO game is that if you don't "Call UNO" by hitting TRIANGLE before you choose a card, you can't "Call UNO" afterward... you just wait for someone to "Challenge" and draw your penalty cards.

That's about all the time that I have to discuss demos for now. Let me know what demos you've played, which ones are great and which ones aren't worth the HDD space.

"Hello IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again? ... OK, well, the button on the side. Is it glowing?... Yeah, you need to turn it on. Err, the button turns it on. Yeah, you do know how a button works, don't you? No, not on clothes." - Roy (The IT Crowd)

I saw the UNO demo on there and passed on it.  Looks like that was the good choice.  I see what you mean about having everyone see your cards....some things just DON'T translate.

The Matt Hazard demo SUCKS.  It's another one of those Demos that times out.  It simply freezed the action and says "DEMO TIME EXPIRED"  I hate that.  The best demos I've played are:

Zuma - A fun puzzle game with GREAT music.  I downloaded this demo when I first got the PS3 and the replay is so enjoyable (and long) that I haven't ever deleted it.  I should actually buy the full version.

God of War III - Wow...I liked it SO much I pre-ordered this title.  Still have the Demo while I wait.  Played it several times.

Dante's Inferno - Wow...I liked it SO much I pre-ordered this title.  Still have the Demo while I wait.  Played it several times.  Chris has even played it once.

Heavenly Sword - When the price comes down to around $10...I WILL buy this game.  The demo is awesomely fun...downloaded before the game came out a long time ago and still play the demo...because it's fun!

Rub-a-dub - a fun demo for the kids that requires you to save your ducklings in a varity of puzzle games.  It's unique because it relies on the sixaxis controller for movement...I bought the full game based on the demo.  Tell you anything?

Batman - Arkham Asylum - Excellent Demo.  I SHOULD buy this game...but too much on my plate right now.

Wolverine - Excellent Demo.  I SHOULD buy this game...but too much on my plate right now.

Having played both the demo and the full version of Arkham Asylum, I'd say the demo doesn't do the game justice.  Most of the fun is in the gadgets which come later.

If I had a PS3, I would get Arkham Asylum over Dante's Inferno, even though the Dante's demo was better than the Arkham demo.

Dante's is pre-ordered and already paid for in full!

I will be picking it up on Tuesday February 9th and will be playing it for over 3 hours...if you wanted to come and watch...it's rumored that you like to watch... :o

It's one of those things where, if I was already at your house and you said, "Hey, I just got this new game and I really want to go play it for 3 hours instead of interacting with you directly, like playing board games, or really in any fashion whatsoever, meaningful or otherwise... care to watch?"

In that circumstance, I'd probably say, "sure."  Because, quite frankly, it takes the pressure off of me to be witty and come up with things to say.  Also it gives me the opportunity to possibly nap in public, which really feels good.  The freedom to drool and fart without caring what other people think... it's liberating.  I hightly recommend trying it sometime... but I really don't think I'd feel good about myself in making a special 40 minute trip all the way to your house just to do nothing for 3 hours... thanks anyway for the offer.

Perhaps I can sit outside your work sometime, and watch the building settle.  Do a lot of people come in and out of your workplace during the day?  They wouldn't be able to hear me farting inside my car, of course, or smell it afterwards for that matter... but they would see how much I'm drooling and correctly deduce that it must smell like peanuts in there.

I don't know what you're talking about. Saying something witty seems to come naturally for you.

Are you referring to my last post?  It took almost 3 hours just to write that...  I wish I was joking. :-[  I went through several drafts trying to craft the tone to be the right mixture of humerous and sarcastic so as not to accidentally offend Wylders', who simply made a legitimate offer based on a previous conversation we had after playing the demo.

I blame it on listening to Paul F. Tompkins' comedy albums at work.  That's right, I said Paul F. Tompkins. ;D

Well, it was really funny. Even with 3 hours I don't think I could write something that came off that funny. I still think you have a natural knack for it. When I try to be funny it often seem to come across as me being too serious... either that or stupid... which of course gets confused with the stuff that I'm actually serious or stupid about.  ;)

I guess I should add Mushroom Wars to the list for one of the best, since I bought it. I wrote a bit more about it in it's own thread.
