Title: Radio Shack "OFF-ROADER" full hobby conversion with remote operated winch
Post by: Tyco Bandit King on January 03, 2011, 23:05:32
Here is a truck from 1992 ive had since I was 5 and it being my first actual 4wd RC car I decided to do a full hobby conversion on it. These trucks came with a super low 1st gear that from the box would climb anything you want it to. They also had a side to side differential which meant if just one wheel from each side got traction all 4 wheels would spin. heres is a list of the things I have done to make this a night and day difference over the stock:

Mamba Micro Pro speed controller- fully programmable through the computer

Trinity Monster Maxx 380 motor

7.4v 1600mah lipo battery

Airtronics FM radio

Tamiya 1/10 scale servo

Other mods:

Custom made front winch using:

Hitec 225mg metal gear servo

Hi-test fishing line for winch cable- over 6 feet

integrated into original bumper behind fake winch using the fake rollers

Weight reduction:

Replaced the 4 "C" batteries and 9V with the lipo dropping weight and bringing it closer to the ground

Remove rear wing for weight loss and weight transfer to the front

Winch over front bumper for better weight transfer

Performance difference:

Will run faster in low gear than the stock one in high gear

Climbs much steeper grades with only the lightest touch of throttle

Runs an amazing 2.5 hours in any condition!!!!

Can winch 4x its weight with ease

This truck is an absolute night and day difference over what it was stock and even with the speed controller turned all the way down its extremely fast in high gear and does exceptionally well off-road

HAHA!!!!!!!!!! oh man i can't bilieve the weight of the hammer doesn't pull it off the self. that is probably the high light of my day, hmm good thing to overwise it would have been changing my oil. that winch design was very clever, i couldn't even tell you did anthing to it.

now you need a video of it running verses the original haha

i am jelous of your skill, and your car shop haha

I was planning on making a video to show the difference between the 2. After making dozens of extreme hobby cars its not so fun after a while. The non hobby cars are really where its at and more fun to modify since they arent suppose to be
Title: Re: Radio Shack "OFF-ROADER" full hobby conversion with remote operated winch
Post by: czstycor/c on January 04, 2011, 00:07:58
i think the nonhobby cars are more appealing to look at too. i dont that might just be me.

if i'm ever in texas again i might just have to look you up. funny my sisters will be down there next week.

does the wich work of the same battery as the motor or is there another battery in there? i thought it would be seperate.

Savedone: I hear you on that ive had all those trucks from that platform like the night runner and the rage. I have 2 9.6v rages one brand new in box and one i use. 6 years ago i put a 25lb weight on one and sat in a wagon and the thing pulled me across my patio. They are the best thing radio shack ever made.

I will have to hook some leds up to the roll bar then make a good youtube video of this one

-My favorite RS hands down, is the Extreme Machine, I ran a Novak 610HRV, w/dual stk. 540's, & to prevent any overheating, I had my Dad cut a Traxxas Sledgehammer motor heatsink in half, it covers the part of the motors that sticks out beautifully.  I've had 4-5 Extreme Machines, & 3 Nikko Hercs.  There is so much possible to do w/these.
-I like the Rock Runner, had a couple of the yellow ones, had the 2 gen. red one, & the RS Tremor, (RR w/rollbar & wing).  I'd like to get the RS Trespasser, it's the light blue, Extreme Machine bodied, dual 540 equipped Rock Runner, (why did Nikko only put 380's in the Thor! ???
-I started in RC in 1985, got a Tow truck rig.  But the real "jump start" was CHRISTmas 86', got the red Nikko Turbo Panther.  A month or 2 later, I broke the front trailing arm.  My dad said he'd epoxy it while I was at school.  I get home, my car is looking worse, here Dad test ran it, did fix it, but forgot to turn it off,  put it on top of the fridge, my neighbor (the fire chief, at the time), did his hand held CB check...that was the biggest jump that car ever had :o

Oh yeah I remember every single one of those trucks. I would have just died to have a extreme machine when I was a kid but they were $200 so that was out of the limit. Ive had 2 hercules one of which I still have, a trail blazer, as well as the avalance with the boat by nikko which was a hercules but 2wd and I have new in the box red thor I love them all.

Reason why I like the off-roader series the best is because the low gear on them is soooo low that they will climb anything. The hercules would struggle bad in grass and hills.

Cure for that, 8.4v 5000mah battery, wont hurt the speed control and the best money you can put into the truck is the 4:1 gear reduction unit RC4wd sells for them. You can have stock electronics and all the power and run time you could ever imagine. Problem with just adding power to the truck is that the front wheels will wanna out spin the rear and you know how those trucks are once the front start spinning, that back get no power and cant climb for crap. Having a gear reduction will make the spin at the same rate and you would never have to do another thing to it. They sell them in 4:1 3:1 2:1 and 2:1 is about enough and gives you all the wheel speed you need.

They also just stopped sell the 380 motor gear reduction which can be put in the thor only in 2:1 but its a major difference. Im looking for a pair on ebay

you guys got pictures of these trucks? i own two nikkos and what i noticed on my road shredder that they are more solid and better build but slower so i figured they would be great for moding

this extreme machine sounds neat

p.s. thought it would be cool if you could wire there lights in the motor sticking out the hood of the off roader maybe a color to match the color acheme of the truck. then two spot light on the bars. just a possability.

Yeah I think I wanna add some lights to it next on the roll bar and possibly the headlights, maybe even add fog lights to the brush guard

Does that have the same chassis as the RS Wild Ranger? They look the same.  If so, a few questions.

1) Can I throw a different 380 motor in it ( http://www.rcsuperstore.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TRA7075&click=2 ) For more speed or do I have to change out the electronics as well?

2) What is the voltage output for the 4 "C" batteries & the 1 9V. I've never seen a truck that combines different batteries like that.

3) Can I use a 9.6V with it or will it fry the electronics? I saw that the Mad Rat & Big Rigs are 9.6V so I thought perhaps the Wild Ranger could handle it.

Nice work btw. I agree, its fun to mod stuff that wasn't meant to be. Hope to see a vid soon.
Title: Re: Radio Shack "OFF-ROADER" full hobby conversion with remote operated winch
Post by: Tyco Bandit King on January 16, 2011, 03:40:44
Yes the wild ranger is identical just different body

1.  yes you can fit any 380 hobby motor but you need to open the center hole to allow the motor to fit in. then drill out the 2 plastic tabs the motor slides onto and mount the motor with motor screws. dont try to use the stock electronics, its a waste of time and wont allow you much more power. You can run an extra cell but still it will not handle a hobby motor and will run like crap

2. the voltage out put is based off the 4 cells, 4.8v. Tons of radio shack cars ran a 9v but it was only used to operate the radio system and does not give you any extra power to the motor

3. 9.6v will definitely fry the electronics and you wont have anywhere to mount it besides the bed of the truck, pointless.

big rigs are entirely different from this chassis and use a completely different electronics board. If you wanna run the truck with radio shack electronics my suggestion would be to take a night runner or rage radio and just drop it in. Then you can run 9.6v but still you wont have anywhere to place the 9.6v pack

For all these reasons is why I set up the truck with full hobby etc. It is as bad ass as it gets and will run longer than I would ever need it to

Hey guy's, I have a box of "Hot Machine" parts (I think it's the same as the extreme machine?) I would gladly trade for other old Nikko/RadioShack/Tyco. I do have a few red body's that aren't completely destroyed. I dont think I have enough parts to build a complete roller, but I do have chassis, gears wheels tires.
I use to work at radio shack in the late 90's, and I'd do some dumpster diving when the manager would clean house on returned R/C's.

Tyco Bandit King, nice work on the convertion. When I was a kid I had the older one with the same chassis. They had a yellow and blue body but with the ballon V tred tires. I remeber low gear being crazy fun. I'd allways try to find a challange for it to clime over. And high gear was fast enough for it to tip over in turns.

I might be interested in those hot machine parts. they use the same drive line as a ton of older radio shack cars like the  intruder, hacksaw, buzzsaw, enforcer, agitator and more.

I took an enforcer and used the lower ratio rear from a intruder and locked front and rear gears and have set it up with all stock parts but its night and day difference. I might need more for other projects.

I remember the yellow and blue trucks, they look pretty sweet almost like an old bigfoot. that is the best chassis radio shack ever made back when they had the side to side locked diffs and super low 1st gear

Post by: jeffescortlx on February 28, 2011, 20:57:14
I had thought about using 2 front axles from a hot machine and using a central mounted gear box as a transfer case and making a crawler out of it. But that idea never materialized.

But I did get my son that truck thats built on a stretched hot machine chassis but with a shift-on-the-fly by the transmitter high and low gear. That's a pretty neat truck to mess around with.

I've been trying to pick up one of these on ebay, but the old ones like this and older have been going for $70-100, and that's not even NIB.
I could have swore last year these radio shack 4x4 were going for 15-30 tops.

I see you put a lot of work into making that winch fit.
I have the same body, but blue and I also took the giant wing off of it. I think pick up trucks look silly with wings on them. I took one off of my Hot machine body to.

I'm trying to pick up a yellow ford "27 dash" like this one to fix up the old one I had as a kid.

Did you know that they are made by Tyco?
When I was a kid, I was'nt a fan of the chassis because there was no suspension, like the Nikko Bubba had. But now that I'm older I appreciate it.

did you build this winch yourself?
Title: Re: Radio Shack "OFF-ROADER" full hobby conversion with remote operated winch
Post by: Tyco Bandit King on March 11, 2011, 21:39:40
Yeah these were built by the tandy corporation and designed by radioshack but shared wheels, tires and radios that tyco used.

I built the winch myself by removing the stopper so it can turn non stop and cut the front bumper to hide it in. I also cut out where the winch rollers are so that they are functional, so it looks fake but actually has a true winch. The winch is powerful enough to snap any line i can put on it.

i am about to do the same conversion to a 1/12 radio shack 4x4 off road tiger however i am using a traxxas titan 380, traxxas receiver and radio, and xl 2.5 esc. my question for you is do you have any more pics of the motor conversion etc also how you did the winch these trucks are rock solid and so fun as stock i cannot wait to upgrade one.

great job by the way :)

Post by: Tyco Bandit King on March 11, 2011, 23:40:34
That would be a sweet conversion, I wanted to do one of those too.

To install the motor

1. drill out the center of the of the mounting plate to allow for the new motor to fit through.

2. since the aftermarket motors are longer you need to cut where the motor sits in just right that the motor will fit flush and so that the gears will mesh right. The better you do this the less chance you have of the motor jumping off and stripping the main gear.

3. make a spacer so that the motor will stay pressed up against the plate, I used a thick peice of polycarbonite plastic from an rc body

I will have to pull the rear end apart and show you pictures of how I did it. The most important thing is cutting where the motor sits so that the gears meshes perfect.

The winch is not hard to do

1. buy a micro servo with steel gears and pull it apart, once apart remove or cut the stopper. Make sure you set it back to still so it can stay stopped in the same position.

2. using an fm radio with a 3rd channel, one way will be the stop position and from that position you can reel it out using the proportion on the remote. The when you flip the channel it reels it back in. Thats how you are able to use a winch with a switch that only has 2 positions. Whats cool is I can adjust not only in or out from the remote but also i can adjust the speed as I winch it in or out.

I have Jeep Wild Willy clone that you can tell came out of the same factory and made by the same designer as the radio shack truck, many parts are identical, just the jeep frame is shorter. But the jeep say's Tyco and Taiyo all over it instead of radio shack. Radio shack/Tandy don't have factories and don't really make any thing, they just have products rebadged.

That must of been a long time ago, late 70's early 80's? When I worked for radioshack in the late 90's the head quarter was in fort worth texas, but it was just the main offices, nothing was manufactured there.

yuk. I'd say 80% of the new bright stuff I see is rubbish. The crawler does'nt look too bad. They put 90% of there effort into making the body look nice, and 10% into making it perform.

Are you sure they did'nt just design the box art and decal's there?

The enforcer/hotmachine/intruder chassis came out of the same factory as the tamiya Quick Drive trucks. For exsample, the Tamiya QD Midnight Pumpkin is just a RadioShack Street Comber painted black with Hot Machine tires.

As you know the quick drives were all 2wd, they had a similar chassis as the intruder/hot machine but 4wd only radio shack had the long chassis and all were 4wd which i believe they did all on their own. The tandy corporation i saw is i believe who was in charge of that. I think they might have built them elsewhere but they were designed by tandy. I do know tandy also manufactured leather in dallas too, i cant see why they wouldnt do their radioshack cars here as well.
