HI GUYS.. well my tandy turbo fox arrived today so i was very keen to get the batts installed and take it for a spin . well when i did all i can say is what a dissopintment :'(. the steering was less than useless also even though the 8 AA batts were new and of good quality the car moved like a snail . . what a let down i know this car is from the 80's but i expected a lot more . so what to do mmmm. ohh i know how about a hobby grade conversion good idea ;D

in the pics you can see i have already started to take out the toy grade electronics servo esc /reciever i will keep the stock 280 motor as is grease up the gearbox service the stock motor .and install hobbygrade esc reciever this will be run on lipo batts the esc a Mtronicks viper 27 i had sitting around a pretty cheap esc waterproof esc will run on 7.2 to 9.6 volt pics (https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi406.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp142%2Fnotatoy1%2FPicture198.jpg&hash=f95f2dfadcca086f2d12565ff83279f60940b5dd) (https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi406.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp142%2Fnotatoy1%2FPicture187.jpg&hash=a09a5573190a5e557b3708166977aa6bbb0af6c4). kwl be good to see the finished results i was gonna bid on 1 of these on ebay last week

thanks scorcher , yes i must say they do seem pretty well made but the electronics are to say the least rubbish , hence the conversion , i had to glue the batt door shut and do some dremmel work inside the chassie to make way for the hobby grade electronics . real easy with the correct tools . the lipo batt will be slung from the the stock hard body via velcro straps ,its the only place left to house the power supply . it is one of the smallest r/c i have the 280 motor seems to rev hard under lipo power so think we are good with that .i may at some point install a exmods motor though they are smaller but do give a higher rpm . like the chili motor .>>>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jAIeA5RUtY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jAIeA5RUtY)

sounds good thos little chili motors are good

-I think Losi "Mini-T" motors are 280's, & you should
be able to still buy pinion gears too, (through hobby
stores, on-line).

thanks savedONE i forgot all about the losi mini -t i will keep it in mind i made some progress today though could not finish the car through lack of ball end connectors for my steering rods :'( i only had the 5mm connectors and need the 3mm will need to order some online as there are no hobby stores were i live .it is always the little things that hold you back . iam uploading a video as we speak of my progress . got the electronics fixed down and working mounted the antenna and also glued the velcro batt straps to the underside of the hard body it remains for the steering rods and also need to make some body posts so the body can be taken on and of with ease . video will follow very shortly thanks guys

ok guys small video of my progress enjoy more to follow thanks .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bN0jeacxc4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bN0jeacxc4)

THANKS ..savedONE to be honest that lipo batt in the video was on its last legs , and in need of charging , but still give good power to the 280 motor . i realy need to install some sort of cut out for the lipo batts it is very seldom now that i use nicad or nimh .. .. thanks for your interest

hi guys well i got fed up on waiting for parts for my steering arms so decided to salvage some from a old traxxas rustler i have with some modification they fit well and the steering is now 100% , so i decided to take the car for a short test run well not as slow as it was but still slow imo so thought i would use a 11.1 volt lipo this did help but still not what a small car like this should be with hobby electronics so i decided to take out the motor on close inspection the motor is rated for 12 volts so anything under that voltage and the motor is not getting full power the max i can get out of these electronics is 11.1 volts and thats pushing it ,so iam going to change out the motor for aone that is rated 7.2 volts think this is what i will purchase pretty cheap and has good reviews ... will keep you guys updated when it comes .. thanks .. http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/car/item/LOSB1216-Mini-Baja-Rx-280-Motor__6ea8/ (http://www.wheelspinmodels.co.uk/car/item/LOSB1216-Mini-Baja-Rx-280-Motor__6ea8/)

this turbo fox looks just like the lobo II i just got as a parts car.

HI czstycor/c yes it is the same car as the lobo2 as i understand just a diffrent name a lot of manufacture's did this check out this thread ;D http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9384694/tm.htm (http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9384694/tm.htm)
-
there does seem to be a few variations of this model with diffrent electronics some were rated 7.2 volts and other ran the 12 volts like the one i have . with cruddy steering lol though why they would make such a small car to run 12 volts is some what strange . never the less once fitted out with a new losi baja motor i think she should be fine here is some more info from the tamiya club .. thanks .. http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=52911 (http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=52911)

yeah i'm probably just gunna use mine of parts. i like the look of the fox better.

iunderstand bro . to be honest i think the lobo 2 is pretty much a colletable now as is most old 80's cars . i have found a 280 can motor in my pit box i think it was of a old toy helli copter i had i have swapd the pinion over from the old motor going to solder it up tonight and give it a try nothing to lose but i still have the losi motor on order . let you know what happens thanks :)

sweet, in time hopefully i am able to undrstand the electronics to upgrade toy rc's to hobby grade. that would be sweet, i am painting bodies now for at least one of my cars. so now i got painting and J.B. weld! haha

iam sure you have all the skills needed bro for this hobby , i started out converting toy cars to hobby level that seems such along time ago now , then of course progressed to the more expensive hobby grade cars , and now have come full circle as they say back to converting toys .lol.. i love all aspects of the hobby though dont have much to do with nitro powerd cars nowadays .. since the invention of lipo batts and brushless systems nitro models have taken second place ,but there are still die hard enthusiasts for nitro models . for me they just take up to much prep time . i found a old screen shot of our toy grade modification forum named newbright rockcrawlers .for the most thats what we did rock crawlers but other modifications to other brands were the norm .it was disbanded a few years ago . some guys started to post on a section made for us buy the admin on r/c universe but it was never the same .and most guys just gave up and stoped posting .. thanks .... well i'm going to schooling for electrical engineering, so i should def. be able to in a few years(right now i'm only doing gen. eds.) . i just know nothing of the circut board, and how and where and what kind of engines to use or battery. but i got some questions. can i use a lipo in my original tycos? like i saw a 7.2v lipo but it looked tiny, and had what looked to be AA or AAA cells, where as my &.2v is clearly C cells. I have one NIMH battery which seems to give my super fast traxx a little more life. and MAH on the battery what is that milli amps an hour? so does it matter how high that number is? what is the best battery for my cars? haha sorry for all the questions.

good to hear your up for the higher education bro .its the only way to go . as for your question the short answer is yes you can use lipo in your tyco r/c but here is the thing with lipo you (CAN NOT ) run them flat like you can a normall batt and also a special charger is requierd . the dimensions a different for variouse packs so that needs looking at before you order any . most none lipo speed controlers do not have a (L.V.C) LOW VOLTAGE CUT OF . so in order to use a lipo in a none brushless system you must install some sort of lvc cut of to stop the lipo from running down past its safe storage voltage , there are a number of ways of doing this there is a simple buzzer and led light type device very cheap from ebay and then there are more sophisticated devices like the novak smart stop .. here is a link that may help you .. http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-lipo-batteries.html (http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-lipo-batteries.html)

well, after electrical engineering, i'm also going to a bible college to go into the missions feild. so does the battery need to be the same cells, and voltage as the nicd batts? and what for the mah? i'll look at the link later class in 15 minutes.

the voltage is best kept the same , some electronics depending on how well made they are can be overvolted like my conversion the limit for that speed controller is 9.6 volts but buy dissabeling the bec i can run a 3s lipo that is 11.1 volts and it copes just fine . the mah rating is just storage the higher the number the longer the batt will last . more info here . http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209187 (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209187) hope this helps .. ;D

buy the way i just give that helli motor a shot in the turbo fox lots of rpm but no guts that is tourqe :'( so will waite on my 280 baja motor ;D
-
to bad you got to wait for the motor.

yes i hate waiting on stuff :-[ looking at the supplier its also out of stock and on back order :'( i guess it will be worth the wait ;D

Seems like a small engine only 280, how fast will that make it go? 15 mph?

not sure of the speed bro ,but its not all about the size of the motor its about power to weight ratio , it a very small car and light weight so it only needs a small motor , but i do expect it to be pretty fast ;D

wow. haha i just want a car that will go over twenty haha. i read that link wow lipo's are complicated, maybe ill just go to NIMH instead. i have like 10 9.6v nicd batteries so maybe i'll just use them
-
-I just saw that vid you posted on Scale 4x4, I have never in my life, seen a donut like that!!! I didn't know that was you on there. There is no point in trying to prove a point to those guys, just go with the flow, or the bickering will never end.
-I was surprised that the car in the vid, wasn't faster tho, on the top end. BB's & aerocar Lube on the gears would really free it up :)

the only problem is i want a fast tyco haha. so i should send notatoy one of mine so he could make it amazingly fast. but i will say i got this hot wheels buggie i guy sold on ebay and it is wicked fast compared to any of my old tycos. its antenna was broke and the body beat up so i painted it, and put a new antenna on it. but it needs new back tires. and the steering should be looked at. its the buggie in this link now i painted it green.

yes i two have that r/c from hot wheels .lol.. and you are correct it is pretty fast though once again the steering is crappy . also my antenna broke i bought it last year bnib i have messed with it a little locked the diff i have also ran it on a 3s lipo and it was outrages . lol.. this is another possible project for me the steering needs attention think i might install hobby grade components once more. it is a pretty neat car and does look like losi mini t . pics next to my turbo fox ohh you will notice i added a drivers head to the fox from a tamiya wild willy .lol.. i didn't know it had a bumper! haha my back wheels look nothing like that haha. mine are bare to the bone, mine also lacked the stickers. mine is the 27 mhz version it seems like there is something wrong with the connection between remote and car. sometimes you hear the motor stops but then catches and speeds up. nice touch with the head in the fox! haha

hi bro well it came brand new with a bumper to me lol . i have taken of some stickers fron the side of the body they looked a bit crapp lol i dont have any problem with the motor and controller but not to sound a know it all thats toy grade electronics for you :-\ . which is pretty much why i change them out . . though the motor does give good power . i have just purchased another small hobby grade r/c from ebay not sure why iam going with the small stuff cause iam a large scale guy .lol. but it does look cool . here it is will post pics when it arrives thanks .. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XTM-RAGE-4WD-BUGGY-1-18th-SCALE-READY-RUN-/320582187204?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XTM-RAGE-4WD-BUGGY-1-18th-SCALE-READY-RUN-/320582187204?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN)

yeah i've seen stuff like that, how much is that in u.s. dollars? still i got this hot wheels buggie for $35, so since its my fastest im okay, could you however tell me how to take the wheels off and maybe give me a link for back replacement tires? if possible.
here are some pictures of the newly painted car
-
hi bro no problem to get the wheels of you will need to open the gearbox .this sounds a lot of work but its real easy just sepperate the two half;s buy taking out the screws on the bottom then you must push the wheel down the shaft away from the compression fitting take of the gear at the end of that shaft it is a push fit and your done ,do the same for the other side then put everything back together , you could always lube your gears and bushings while you have the gearbox open just a thought .lol.. i will check out the size of the tries today and report back ;) ;D
-
OHH sorry bro the price in dollers well here is the same car brand new , bear in mind the one i just bought does have alloy upgrades .. http://www.hobbypeoplestores.com/index.php/review/product/list/id/37108/ (http://www.hobbypeoplestores.com/index.php/review/product/list/id/37108/)

OK bro i just measured the stock tires rear only and i get 40 mm inside diameter 55 outer diameter and the width is 30 mm . not seen any online its hard to locate because they seldom post the tire size on the web sight your best bet is to take the wheel to your LHS and then you can try them on for size hope this helps
-
haha it does sound like a lot of work. if i ever find a hobby shop near me maybe they could just do it :) and maybe they could up grade my remote and reciever, i ran it with my brothers black fast traxx truck( 49mhz) and it wuldn't go until he(with the controller or the car got far away. and the car is 27 mhz
i should put a bumper on it too. I thought it would look cool with the tires from my lobo haha having big back wheels.

to be honest bro it is real easy if you give me some time i will do a step buy step tutorial in a seprate thread with pics if that will help hell may be even a video . lol of course you could try the easy route first dont take the wheels off use a sharp craft knife and cut of the old tires , i have done this before on other r/c as long as you cut them of clean the other rubber should stick just a thought .lol.. ;D
-
sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha i can wait
-
sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha i can wait
well iam afraid you will have to .lol . so much to do so little time to do it i also think that hobby shop would not upgrade your car for you these are very much a D.I.Y affair hobby shops only upgrade hobby class r/c that is hobby grade . :-X
-
how lame of them, i'll give them buisness they shouldn't turn me down.
-
how lame of them, i'll give them buisness they shouldn't turn me down.
well to be honest i agree but the reason they dont work on toy cars is because there is no parts support , like i said these cars are very much a D.I.Y affair . if anything breaks you either have to find another donor or fabricate the parts yourself something i have done for years .lol.. ;)
-
haha i need a teacher.
-
me to lol.. good news my losi 280 motor just arrived from wheelspin models ;D.. now i can get down to business update with pics very soon thanks ;D

you can see that these motors have replaceble brushes unlike the closed end bell type i did try this motor before fitting on a 7.2 volt batt and it has a kick like a mule almost jumped out my hand .. and in these pics you can see the motor fitted to the turbo fox i have left the end fixing cap of so you can see the motor properly it needs soldering up to the esc .that i shall do tonight ;D (https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi406.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp142%2Fnotatoy1%2FPicture213.jpg&hash=a2a9fa7ec4eece16366abc37dcee4c4a0587e58d) (https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi406.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp142%2Fnotatoy1%2FPicture214.jpg&hash=6b924fa17592e7c428fc7c21979ecdd300c7beb2) (https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi406.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp142%2Fnotatoy1%2FPicture212.jpg&hash=e91756798636718d11f81296c56380c8bc946ebb)

HI czstycor/c sounds like you got a bargain job lot there .. :D.. i would think this 280 would fit but am on the understanding that the tyco fast traxx runs duell 370 motors ??? ohh sorry i went over your post again HALF TRAXX :-[ could you post pics and dimensions of the old motor ?????
-
haha, i tried it, the half traxx is nippier than the fast traxx but probably the same speed overall. check the tco thread in a little i'm going to update my collection. sadly no remote i have collectly controls the half traxx. :'(

tyco thread*
width 1 1/4 inches
length 1 3/4 inches
those are rough
-
hi bro great collection i just looked them over in the your other thread awsome ;D.. the motor i just run a tape over a 370 motor and it is more or less the same size as you have stated the 280 is smaller buy both dimensions , so look for a 370 brushed motor should be lots about on the nett ;D
-
ohh losi do a 370 to .lol.. but this is in the united kingdom check out tower hobbies ;D http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=29141 (http://www.modelsport.co.uk/?CallFunction=ShowSpecification&ItemID=29141)

would putting a different 370 in it make it faster? and would i need to change out the electronics

hi bro yes and no that motor will be faster than stock but should not pull enough amps to overload the stock esc as it is the closed end bell type with none replacable brushes unlike the 280 i ordered but if you were to fit something like the 370 in this next link you would need new electronics as it is whats known as a mod motor with a high amp draw .. http://www.losi.com/Products/Features.aspx?ProdId=LOSB0837 (http://www.losi.com/Products/Features.aspx?ProdId=LOSB0837)
-
hmm interesting
-
or if you wanted something running more stock in a 300 can size these are pretty good motors and have lots of tourq http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/graupner_7302.html (http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/graupner_7302.html)

WELL GOOD NEWS ;D she is finished at last made and installed the body posts today and did a little tidy up did a small test run and WOW what a difference . i have chosen low gear on the selector lever for better acceleration not realy to botherd about top end it seems to have good speed . running on 7.4 volt on 9.6 i would think it would be uncontrolable . iam undecided as to weather or not to lock the differential a old rock crawler trick that gives better climbing and tourqe . any how video to follow very soon just need the rain to stop ha ha thanks :D ;D

OK GUYS BAD NEWS epic fail i was running the turbo fox to get some video when i hit a bolder with the car ,upon till that point things were great , so after inspecting the car there was a little damage to the rear wing no big deal . so i set of again thinking nothing wrong then i heard the noise of doom gearbox :'( slipping . opend it up and the teeth have striped of the main gear . so i selected high gear ratio hopeing this would solve the problem . but no still the same seems the gearbox is beyonde repair . :'(. and so ends the life of the turbo fox . on another note iam going to strip out the hobby grade motor and electronics for hot wheels mini t look a like .so nothing will be waisted . seen in this pic she runs a stock 280 so the losi will fit i will tranplant the servo and hobby grade esc also the reciever thanks ..(https://www.dragonshobbies.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi406.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fpp142%2Fnotatoy1%2F001.jpg&hash=70985471dd0b1954087cfd884ff91212a1618945)

yes well thats the way it goes with toy car conversions you win some you lose some great shame as it was running great i suspect that may be because of the age of it that the plastic gears were pretty weak .. never mind i have the hot wheels in pieces as we speak the losi 28 motor is fitted and the toy electronics are out will start a new thread thanks ;D
