Friday 1/23/2004 18:20 - StarCraft Day

My computer just crashed again while I was writing my journal entry. I wonder if one of the memory sticks is going bad?

This day has been another week full of Java programming, although we did take a little break from everything yesterday.

Yesterday morning I got up and did a couple minor updates on the MessianicYisrael.net website before studying a little more Java. Around noon we were getting ready to leave for St. Petersburg when I got a call from Vern. He was asking if I’d bring a computer monitor that I had previously offered to bring to play StarCraft. After loading up the car we were on our way. We stopped in a Burger King, a rarity for me, so that we wouldn’t be starving waiting for dinner.

At 13:30 we arrived at Ken’s apartment. Beth dropped me off so that I could play a little StarCraft with Ken and Vern while she was out visiting some of her former co-workers. It took some time to get the computers hooked up since the router was not set yet and Vern also was having some trouble with the monitor that I brought because it was so old that it was conflicting with his video card.

Beth came back a while later, I think we had just finished our second StarCraft match and we were getting the neighbor kid hooked into the network for some 4-player combat. I think we might have played one quick 4-player game before Vern’s marathon game got started.

Vern created a match on one of the Brood War maps, with us 4 against 2 computers. It was a Free For All battle but we had agreed to defeat the computer opponents together first. That didn’t happen though. I built up my brood of Zerglings and Hydralisks and went out to destroy the computer opponents before they had a chance to retaliate. Unfortunately at that same time those very same enemies were destroying Ken. I’m not how Vern and Matt were handling things in the beginning, but they seemed stuck in their respective bases. I soon found an enemy base and told the other guys where it was. I continued to attack while requesting support to no avail. I finally killed one computer enemy but Matt seemed to be getting hit hard and Vern was working on some serious defense. After about 30 minutes Matt was dead and I was close. I held on for another half hour, struggling to stay alive but eventually getting starved out because I lost all my structures and rebuilding came slow. Vern managed to stay in the game with his massive defense and he continued to play while Ken, Matt, and I started another separate match. After 5 hours Vern had finally beaten the last Protoss opponent, although the rest of us can’t imagine inching along for such a long laborious game.

We finished up the night with dinner and a game of Bang! I hope everyone had as much fun as I did since we were there quite late.
