NIMH batteries in RC Toys
« on: March 19, 2011, 16:59:43 »
I was in Toys R Us a couple days ago and saw that lots of the R/C cars there had stickers advertising "More Power/Longer Lasting" with NIMH batteries. One that said that was a huge 9.6V Dodge Charger, which caught my eye because my son said that he wanted a Dodge Charger RC car for his birthday. Have any of you guys checked those out?
"Hello IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again? ... OK, well, the button on the side. Is it glowing?... Yeah, you need to turn it on. Err, the button turns it on. Yeah, you do know how a button works, don't you? No, not on clothes." - Roy (The IT Crowd)

Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries do have more capacity and longer run times, but do not supply any more power than the old Nickel-cadmium battery (NiCd).  NiMH batteries can have in upwards of 5000 milliampere-hour (mAh)where as NiCd is usually only in the 100smah or low 1000s.  Even better than NiMH is the Lithium-ion polymer (LiPo) batteries that can exceed 5000mAh.  However, the actual power that a battery puts out is based on its voltage.  Meaning that a 9.6v NiMH battery would have the same power output as an old NiCd.  The NiMH would just last longer.

Hope this helps ;)

Is the life expectancy on the NiMH better then Nicad?
I tried to use 8 NiMH AA in a old Nikko Buggy, I used a charger rated for NiMH, set it at 2 amps, then later set it down to 1 amp and the suckers got hot fast. And they wont provide the power as an old Nicad 9.6 battery pack can do.
The NiMH are a few years old, and are labeled as camera batteries.

I'm swapping them out for some old Nicads to see if it will perform better.
