Great pictures. I remember that  turbo aero buggy from  radio shack on the left.     Looks like you put a nikko alley cat  wing on your white  nikko panther.   Your Turbo hopper has the larger back wheels meaning it  is a newer second release.

I think there 380 sized motor. I had a ton of Nikko's as a kid.
Some times the hardest part of swapping the motor's is getting the tranny apart (wheels have pressed in metal colars) and getting the pinon gear off and on since there pressed on to.

The  Nikko's were  always better built and the Tyco's were always faster.

True that!
About the only way to break a Nikko is to drive it over with a car. But 9.6 tyco's are faster then any 9.6 Nikko I've ever driven. Except the Nikko's that have the 540's and 7.2.

Thanks for clarifying that guys. I never thought of Nikko's as very good toys. Thinking back on it now, my only experience with them was with 3 boys who had completely trashed the ones they had. I guess from that experience I've always assumed that Nikko brand was inferior quality and never paid any attention to them after that.
"Hello IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again? ... OK, well, the button on the side. Is it glowing?... Yeah, you need to turn it on. Err, the button turns it on. Yeah, you do know how a button works, don't you? No, not on clothes." - Roy (The IT Crowd)

You should really give Nikko's another chance! At least the older stuff, I'm not so sure about the new stuff.
The old Nikko's have better electronics, and the chassis are built a lot stronger then the tyco's. But just dont exspect any of the 9.6 Nikko's to be as powerfull as the Tyco 9.6 stuff.

I have to admit the  Tyco's do look a lot better though!  Not to mention  Tyco had all the comercials durring  cartoons.   Nikko never did any marketing like that.        Tyco  RC is now part of mattel toys and nothing like it use to be. Nikko is still going strong today.

Speaking of mettel/hot wheels, I have one of the newer 540 motor 4wd shaft driven buggies from wal-mart. It's not too bad, digital proportional. My only complaint is it need's some real bearings in the wheel hub's. It's only seen about 3 batttery packs and it allready getting a little slop.
I also have a smaller ~1/18 scale hot wheels/tyco "Dune Devil", takes a 9.6 and has a little 380 motor. It's not fully proportional....like the box said it was. It's fairly quick with a good battery pack. But just is'nt the same as a Baja Bandit.  ;D

In Italy we didn't have the Tyco/Taiyo cars.
Actually, I didn't know about the Tyco until a month ago  ::)
Only Nikko (that was called Gig-Nikko) and they were strong in the commercials.
Here is the italian commercial:
