Tyco R/C Collection ** Updated Pics 4/24/09
« on: March 12, 2009, 15:10:49 »
Hi All,

I just wanted to join in the festivities and show off my collection of tyco r/cs.  When i was in elementary, i remember being in awe of all the tyco rc commercials.  especially the turbo hopper, jumping off the cliff and seeing how the turbo work.  man, that was the s**t to me.

Thanks to ebay and craigslist, ive been able to collect the 3 r/cs i had when i was younger (hopper, stocker, and black lambo) plus many more of the ones i dreamed about.  im still looking for a twin turbo hopper, but im sure ill have that soon...

The mods done on the Tyco R/Cs were done using stock pinion gears and using upgraded 280 motors with higher rpms.  they are really smooth but scream like a bat outta hell (ill get mph numbers soon when the rain stops, i got a speed gun)!  best part though is the use of hobby servos for steering (ahhh!)

I also thew in some misc r/cs at the end. i also got some other hobby grade r/cs, but for whatever reason those are not as fun  ::)!

Heres my Modded Twin Turbo Black Lamborghini with upgraded motors and esc

Modded Super turbo hopper with upgraded motors and esc

Target Turbo Indy (dont know the exact name)

2 of my Turbo Stockers (49 and 27 MHz)

Red Turbo Hopper

Red Twin Turbo Lamborghini (daily driver per se, the other is boxed)

Twin Turbo Indy

Super Turbo Hopper (original, no upgrades like my other one)

Turbo Bandiy (really good condition, one of my favorites)

Twin Turbo Indy in different color scheme, in box

Another Red Twin Turbo Lambo in box, mint condition  :)

2 Turbo 962's (27 adn 49 Mhz), boxed

Another Turbo Stocker and a Turbo Indy (yellow) boxed

Pic showing most of collection in one photo, just to wart off anyone suggesting i dont have doubles of red lambo (theres always some haters  ;))

Just for kicks

Radio Shack Golden Arrow (pretty fast back in the day)

Modded Nikko Dictator with upgraded esc and motors

NEW PICS...

Tyco Jeep w/Winch

Tyco RC Mega Racing (2 Trucks RC, fat track)

Radio Shack Red Turbo Lambo

im pretty sure its the size of a typical rs '280' motor.  appox 24mm in diameter and the want to say that the pinion is about 1.1mm.  that should be right, but i could be totally wrong since i havent messed with the modding stuff in a while...

what i did is do research on towerhobbies.com.  there they give dimensions of the motors and the different specs and stuff.  i dont know how much a stock hopper board can take though, you might just burn it out if you upgrade the motor.  although you could go find a good stock replacement to freshen it up a bit, im sure that would cool too.

fyi, i remember in my research that most 280 sized motors are used in airplanes, bc of size/weight and higher rpms...

Great post and impressive collection.    How did you remove the pinions?

The golen arrow is a nice touch.   It's very well built, but the red arrow was slightly faster.... but not as durable.

couple of ways of doing it....

1.  gear/pinion gear remover - they are used in the airplane hobby world.  i got a cheap one for like 12 dollars, i think it was towerhobbies or another big name online hobby store.  you have to make sure the kit has small enough shafts to fit into the middle of the pinion gear.  this worked maybe half the time.  it sort of helps to heat the gear a bit before trying to push it off the motor.  sometimes the pinion is on there pretty good and will break loose and youll probably destroy your gear puller (strip the threads)...

2.  the second way is the much more easier why of doing....but that will have to wait until i finish building my website on tyco rcs.  itll be easier to show using pics :)

i got won a tyco jeep off of ebay (closed earlier this week)...

i also obtained the red radio shack lamborghini that i believe was featured in an ol skool radio shack commercial.  it runs on like 6 C sized batteries.  pretty quick car, i had one back in the day for like a week, the found out about the twin turbo tyco ones and promptly returned it (a big hassle from what i remember)...

ive had this shinsei cheetah on the back burner for like a year and a half.  i got it off of craigslist, looked at it, remembered why i returned to toy r us like 2 days after i bought it when i was in middle school, and kinda forgot about it.  its still in the box...im sure people will remember it since it was normally in the display case with the tycos over at toy r us, when toy r us was a REAL toy store :p

Could you expand on why you don't like the Shinsei Cheetah? Is it the style, controls, or what?

Is it the Jeep that looks like a Wild Willy with a driver? I have a body and bit and peices of one.

My First ever R/C car was a silver radio shack Ferrari, must of been the same chassis, took 5-6 C batterys and was one wheel drive. lolz Quick for being a little kid, turned real sharp in one direction...

the one thing i didnt like about the cheetah was the front bumper....its a piece of wire bended to look like a bumper, but it was flat.  it was not curved upwards, and being the adventurous driver in my younger days, this didnt allow the climbing or jumping off steep ramps/hills as the bumper would hit.  i guess in 4x4 truck talk i think its called approach angle or something?  what it is good for is a handle to carry the car around though...

yes the jeep willy with the driver!

i think that ferrari you speak of is the same chassis.  i think my friend had a silver one, testarossa or something?

That Radio Shack Lamborghini body looks exactly like the Tyco Lamborghini body to me. Anyone know if it is the same mold?
