Wednesday 2008-07-23 - Conquest of the Empire and Power Grid on short notice

Last night we had a short notice game night primarily because Chris ("The Unnameable"/"Me-nuh") is not available most other nights during the week. The most recent gamer to join our group, Mac (tampamac2002), arrived shortly after Chris. By that time my wife was home from work so she spent some time with the kids while the three of us guys got into our first game.

Before Mac had arrived, I was comparing the original Conquest of the Empire, published by Milton Bradley, with the recent Eagle Games version. Since Chris (TylerChuit) was on his way but not expected for about an hour and a half, I suggested the original CotE since it should finish in about that amount of time.

After the introduction and explanation of game play, we got going with me starting on Macedonia, Mac on Egyptus, and Chris (The Unnameable) on Hispania. While Mac's troops spread like wildfire claiming territory, Chris and I were sitting outside of Italia, waiting for the right time to claim the open territory. Around the time that Mac's tribute forced us into the first inflation, I claimed Italia and proposed a 3-turn-truce with Chris. This allowed Chris to refocus his attention on Mac and gave me the freedom to regroup back at Macedonia.

Once Mac had a full catapult legion, he sent them out on the sea. Having one less catapult than he did, I hesitated moving out to meet him, especially since I didn't have the income to replace any catapults that I might lose. I backed off from Italia, and Mac claimed that territory then moved south with his ship to attack Macedonia. In the meantime, I had prepared two incomplete legions - one of infantry and one of catapults. I also had two ships for my legions. Knowing that Mac was heading for my capital, I sent my Caesar out to lead my catapult legion along with one other legion toward Egyptus.

Chris was building up his army and spent some time moving a ship around to claim Brittania, but the war was over before he got there. Seeing my two legions coming at him, Mac chose to move his Caesar away from his capital with a single catapult. I lost one or two catapults in the attack, but claimed his capital and a few talents that he had saved. In the next turn he captured my capital, but at that point he had moved his Caesar onto a space that I could get to by sea. I killed his Caesar, claimed his army, and Chris conceded.

Chris (TylerChuit) arrived just in time to see the end of Conquest of the Empire. We packed up that game and discussed what was next. I suggested Power Grid, since I'd been wanting to play that one for a while. We started off with a practice round and then Beth joined us for the full game.
